SI-RD-002 · The second issue of the SI R&D Reports series
What Claude Mythos means for the next 18 months of cybersecurity
A companion video analysis of Issue 002 — the reframe, the locked numbers, and the eighteen-month action window.

In April 2026 Anthropic showed that a frontier model can autonomously find and weaponize software vulnerabilities at a scale no human team can match — then deliberately withheld it, releasing access only to roughly fifty vetted partners. The industry instinct has been to argue about the model: breakthrough or marketing event? That is the wrong argument.
The decisive fact is not Mythos; it is the clock Mythos started. The same capability will reach open and on-device models within roughly eighteen months. Mythos is the controlled preview of a threat that does not stay controlled. Organizations that treat the next eighteen months as a mobilization window will be defensible on the other side of it; those that wait for the capability to be “generally available” will meet it as an adversary, not a tool.
The Claude Mythos Preview, the demonstrated capability, and Project Glasswing — the restricted-access consortium whose independent validation is the strongest signal in the record.
Why containment buys time but does not stop the trend — and why open-source reproductions put equivalent capability on consumer hardware on an eighteen-month horizon.
A skeptic-balanced read: what is genuinely real (collapsed time-to-exploit, order-of-magnitude discovery scale, lowered attacker barrier) and what to hold loosely.
Offense moves first; access is unevenly distributed; AI-written code is a compounding liability; and the governance repricing of patch cadence, vendor selection, and cyber-insurance.
A board-ready action checklist — Now (this quarter) and Strategic (6–18 months) — from a 72-hour AI-CVE patch SLA to AI-native continuous internal red-teaming.
How the frontier capability compares with the open-weight and proprietary alternatives already reproducing much of what made Mythos notable.
